What is a Lip Lift?

A lip lift is a surgical procedure which shortens the philtrum, or the space between the nose and upper lip. This increases the amount of visible pink tissue in the upper lip, creating a more voluminous appearance and increasing the amount of visible teeth as you smile. In addition, a lip lift can create a more balanced or proportionate look for patients with a naturally longer philtrum. 

Am I a Candidate for a Lip Lift?

Patients who haven’t achieved their desired results from lip fillers or who are looking for a more permanent option may be good candidates for a lip lift. The procedure may also be a good option for older patients who have found that their philtrum has grown longer over time due to lack of collagen production and sagging or drooping skin. However, a lip lift is not recommended for patients with naturally short space between the nose and upper lip or for those who smoke. Dr. Paquet will also ask about any health conditions that may make you a poor candidate, such as oral herpes, diabetes, or blood clotting disorders.

Types of Lip Lift Procedures

Several surgical techniques can be used to achieve a lifted upper lip. During your consultation, Dr. Paquet will recommend the best approach based on your facial anatomy, goals, and preferences.

Subnasal Lip Lift

The most commonly performed lip lift technique is the subnasal, or “bullhorn,” lip lift. In this approach, an incision is made just beneath the base of the nose, allowing a small strip of skin to be removed and the upper lip to be gently elevated. The incision follows the natural curves of the nostrils, making any resulting scar well-concealed.

Central Lip Lift

A central lip lift also shortens the philtrum using an incision beneath the nostrils but focuses more specifically on lifting the central portion of the upper lip. This technique can be ideal for patients who want more central lip show without changing the outer corners of the mouth.

Corner Lip Lift

Sometimes referred to as a “smile lift,” a corner lip lift focuses on elevating the outer corners of the mouth to reduce a downturned appearance. This technique is often combined with other lip lift procedures for a more comprehensive enhancement.

Italian Lip Lift

The Italian lip lift uses two smaller incisions beneath each nostril, rather than a single continuous incision. This approach may be an option for patients who prefer minimal scarring or require only a subtle lift.

Before Your Lip Lift Procedure

Before your lip lift procedure, Dr. Paquet will meet with you during a consultation to discuss your aesthetic goals and determine whether a lip lift is the right option for you. During this appointment, he will examine your facial proportions, review your medical history, and explain the surgical plan in detail, including what to expect before, during, and after the procedure. You may be asked to avoid certain medications or supplements that can increase bleeding, and if you smoke, you will need to stop in advance of surgery to promote proper healing. Dr. Paquet will ensure that all your questions are answered and that you feel fully prepared and confident before your procedure.

The Lip Lift Procedure

Anesthesia Options

Most lip lift procedures can be performed under local anesthesia or light sedation, allowing patients to remain awake but comfortable throughout the surgery. For those who prefer, general anesthesia may be an option as well, depending on individual needs and preferences.

Surgical Technique

Dr. Paquet begins by making precise incisions just beneath the base of the nose, following the natural contours to ensure any scarring remains discreet. A small portion of tissue is removed to elevate the upper lip, enhancing the amount of visible pink tissue and improving overall facial balance.

Customization

In some cases, Dr. Paquet may also lift the corners of the mouth to correct a downturned appearance and create a more refreshed resting expression. Each procedure is carefully customized to the patient’s facial anatomy for the most natural-looking results.

Closing the Incisions

Once the lip is lifted and reshaped, the incisions are closed with fine sutures. The entire procedure typically takes about one hour, and patients are able to return home the same day with detailed aftercare instructions to support optimal healing.

After Your Lip Lift Procedure

Immediately after your lip lift, you can expect some swelling and a tightening sensation. Some discomfort is normal, and Dr. Paquet can prescribe medication to help you stay comfortable through the healing process. Swelling typically dissipates within one to four weeks after the surgery, and final results are typically visible about six weeks after surgery. Most patients require about a week to two weeks of social downtime after the surgery, as the area will likely be bruised or red in addition to swollen. However, non-strenuous activities can typically be resumed immediately after the procedure.
