Lip Lift

in Phoenix, AZ

While lip augmentation procedures are increasing in popularity, not all options offer permanent results. Many patients are interested in long-term results that most lip injections cannot provide. A lip lift is a surgical procedure which offers the appearance of a fuller upper lip without the need for routine, repeated injections. Patients in the Phoenix, Arizona area can turn to Dr. Paquet and Paquet Facial Plastic Surgery for lip lift results with little to no visible scarring.

What is a Lip Lift?

A lip lift is a surgical procedure which shortens the philtrum, or the space between the nose and upper lip. This increases the amount of visible pink tissue in the upper lip, creating a more voluminous appearance and increasing the amount of visible teeth as you smile. In addition, a lip lift can create a more balanced or proportionate look for patients with a naturally longer philtrum.

Who is a Candidate for a Lip Lift?

Patients who haven’t achieved their desired results from lip fillers or who are looking for a more permanent option may be good candidates for a lip lift. The procedure may also be a good option for older patients who have found that their philtrum has grown longer over time due to lack of collagen production and sagging or drooping skin. However, a lip lift is not recommended for patients with naturally short space between the nose and upper lip or for those who smoke. Dr. Paquet will also ask about any health conditions that may make you a poor candidate, such as oral herpes, diabetes, or blood clotting disorders.

The Lip Lift Procedure

Most lip lifts can be completed under local anesthesia or basic sedation, meaning you are awake during the procedure but the treatment area is numb and you are relaxed.  Other patients elect to have it done under anesthesia.  Incisions are made just below the nose, ensuring that any resulting scarring is subtle and well concealed within the natural contours. After making incisions, Dr. Paquet will remove a small amount of tissue so the upper lip is lifted slightly. In some cases, the lip will be strategically lifted at the corners of the mouth to create a more pleasant resting appearance. Once the lip is sufficiently reshaped and lifted, incisions are closed with sutures.

Recovery After a Lip Lift

Immediately after your lip lift, you can expect some swelling and a tightening sensation. Some discomfort is normal, and Dr. Paquet can prescribe medication to help you stay comfortable through the healing process. Swelling typically dissipates within one to four weeks after the surgery, and final results are typically visible about six weeks after surgery. Most patients require about a week to two weeks of social downtime after the surgery, as the area will likely be bruised or red in addition to swollen. However, non-strenuous activities can typically be resumed immediately after the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lip Lift

How long does it take for a lip lift to settle?

For the first 1 to 2 weeks, you should expect some swelling around your lips. It usually takes around 6 to 8 weeks for the incisions to fully heal and become less noticeable. You may also experience tightness around your lips or lower face for another 2 to 4 months afterwards.

How long will I need to refrain from exercise after my lip lift?

You will need to refrain from anything strenuous for at least a week after your lip lift surgery, but you are welcome to do light exercise, like taking a walk. Be sure to protect your incisions from the sun if youre going to have prolonged exposure, however.

Am I a good candidate for lip lift surgery?

Generally speaking, most people are good candidates for a lip lift. However, if you do not have enough space between the curve of your upper lift and the bottom of your nose, you may be a better candidate for fillers instead. A lip lift usually is best if you have more than 1.5 inches between your nose and upper lip.

Is a lip lift permanent?

Yes, a lip lift is permanent. However, your face will continue to mature and age as years go by, so there is a chance of some further shifting or change from your initial results.

Does a lip lift look natural?

If you seek a board-certified facial plastic or cosmetic surgeon, your lip lift results will look extremely natural. Dr. Paquet prides himself on the expertise and experience to produce the most natural-looking results for all your facial concerns.
